If you live in Milford and you are looking for Brazilian jiu jitsu, you have a handful of options within a short drive. They are not the same. Here is how to tell them apart.
Lineage is not marketing. It is the whole thing.
Brazilian jiu jitsu came out of one family. Carlos and Helio Gracie built it in Brazil and spent decades proving it worked. Renzo Gracie, Carlos’s grandson, brought it to New York and built one of the most respected academies in the world.
When you walk into a school, the question is not how new the mats are. The question is who taught the person teaching you, and who taught them. That chain is either real or it is not.
Renzo Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy Milford is part of Team Renzo Gracie. Professor Mark Cerrone is a 5th-degree black belt awarded by Renzo Gracie himself. He has trained since 1996 as one of the first students at the original Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City. There is no gap in that line.
What to ask before you sign anything
- Who is the head instructor’s black belt under? A straight answer should come back immediately, with a name you can look up.
- How long has the head instructor trained? Decades and years are different things.
- Who actually teaches the classes? At some schools the name on the wall is never on the mat.
- Can I watch a class first? Any academy worth joining will say yes.
- Is there a real beginner track? You should not be thrown into an advanced class on day one.
What training actually looks like here
Classes start with warm-ups and drilling, move into technique, and finish with live rounds. You go at the pace you can handle. Nobody is trying to hurt you. The people who have been here longest are usually the ones most careful with new students.
Progress is measured against where you started, not against the person next to you. That is how the Gracie family taught it and that is how it works.
Who trains in Milford
Adults starting at zero. Former wrestlers from Foran and Jonathan Law looking for something after high school. Parents who signed their kid up and ended up on the mat themselves. Police and first responders. People who just want to be harder to hurt.
